I can't believe September has already come and gone. I must say, being a working mom is more of a challenge than I could have ever imagined! I have yet to find a routine and a good balance in my life. It has gotten easier to drop Emma off at daycare but between 1:30 and 4:30 when my students leave and I get to pick her up, I get incredibly anxious to get to see her. The hardest part was missing one of Emma's "firsts". Ms. Pilar informed me that Emma had started rolling over from her back to her tummy. Well, Emma did not display this new trick for mommy and daddy for several more days. But boy is she rolling all over now! I am so proud of her and she is so proud of herself for doing it!
Another first during this month was that Emma attended her first birthday party for her girlfriend, Kayla, who turned one. Emma had lots of fun at the party and was sad that she wasn't allowed to eat any cake!
Ms. Piggy also started eating rice cereal in a highchair like a big girl. I was going to hold off until her four month appointment (which actually wasn't scheduled until she was 4 1/2 months old) but Emma's lip smacking and attempts to grab my plate at dinner indicated to me that she just might be ready for some cereal. She had NO problem eating it! No ugly faces. No spitting any back out. My lil' meatball acted like she had been eating from a spoon her whole life! Due to all of her funky food allergies, we will probably hold off on veggies and fruits for another month or so to give her digestive system more time to mature.
Emma got her first cold, starting with a runny nose last Monday. Since my time off from work is very limited, I wasn't sure if I should keep her home or not. I decided to take a half day off. She seemed okay, but her runny nose persisted through the week. Well, by Tuesday, her poor little cold had progressed and she couldn't breathe well at all. Poor baby couldn't nurse unless I was sitting in some funky pose that allowed her to be upright to eat. She wasn't running a fever, but she was pretty miserable. We put a humidifier in her room. put Baby Vicks on the bottom of her feet (Thanks for the suggestion Auntie Andrea!), and put a pillow under her mattress to help elevate her head. She had a restless night so daddy stayed home with her on Wednesday, I stayed home with her on Thursday, and her Mema came for a visit and stayed home with her on Friday. She slept A LOT on those three days, which helped start getting rid of that nasty cold. :(
On Friday, Emma had her four month checkup. I wasn't sure if she would be able to get her shots because of her cold. However, she checked out okay. No fever, no ear infections and her lungs were clear. Just a cold virus. Ms. Piggy now weighs 14.1 pounds and is 25 1/4 inches long. This puts her in the 60th percentile for weight and 90th percentile for height! It's hard to believe that when I was pregnant, I was sent for an additional ultrasound because I was so small and Emma measured in the 35th percentile at one time! Her head also shot up in size to the 90th percentile. Due to this huge change (everything was at the 50th percentile at her 2 month appointment), the doctor wanted to have Emma's head checked to make sure everything was okay. This is due to her head size increase and due to the prominence of her soft spot. I'm not really concerned and neither is the doctor, but they are sending her in for an ultrasound just to make sure. Fortunately since she is so young and her soft spot is still open, they can do an ultrasound and don't have to do a CT scan (like her friends Mahalia and Ian) where they have to sedate the baby. Hopefully everything checks out okay, but as of right now, I'm not too worried.
I thought some fresh air would do Emma some good, so we went to the beach in Coronado today. Emma LOVES putting her feet in the sand and the water still. She checked out the Hotel del Coronado, but I sadly informed her that she wasn't allowed to get married there because mommy and daddy wouldn't be able to afford it. =) I forgot my camera at work this weekend so I will upload some new pictures next week sometime. Hopefully I will have more energy to update her blog more frequently. Emma typically only gets up once during the night for about 15 minutes to eat but getting up everyday at 4:30 to give me enough time to pump, get ready, get the baby ready, get her to daycare, and get to work by 8 is very tiring. My hopes are that a more normal routine will fall into place sometime soon. My days are long and I am constantly on the go from 4:30 until Emma is fast asleep by 8:30.
We all hope everyone is doing well! XOXOXO

Where's the pause button? You're growing up way too fast Emma! I hope the Vicks worked well and you're feeling better. Can't wait to see you soon.
yay big girl! i can't believe you're big enough to eat rice cereal already!! that means i need to see you soon because it has been WAY too long. tell your mama to figure out a day that works for you girls...we are flexible. =) i'm sad that you had a stinky cold. =( no fun for emma, mommy, or daddy! but i'm glad that you're still growing so well and i agree that the head growth thing is NOTHING to worry about. good thing you get to check things out the ultrasound-way instead of a ct scan. i would hate to have to visit your mommy in jail for attacking the doctors. haha! i miss you and your mommy!! =)
